Sequential gross and histological changes of bursa and thymus in acute and chronic experimental aflatoxicosis of broiler birds

Gross and histological changes of bursa and thymus in acute and chronic experimental aflatoxicosis of broiler birds were studied in detail. Birds were fed with 4 ppm of aflatoxin for 4 weeks (acute toxicosis) and 1 ppm of aflatoxin for 12 weeks (chronic toxicosis). In both acute and chronic toxicosis histological examination of liver sections revealed periportal fibrosis, bile-duct proliferation and paravascular haemorrhages. Grossly the bursa and thymus in toxin fed birds were reduced in size and weight when compared to control birds. The reduction in the weight of these organs was dose dependent. In acute toxicosis, there was pronounced cytolysis of lymphoid cells of the bursal follicles, and necrosis of the cortical and medullary zones of the thymus. In chronic toxicosis depletion of lymphocytes from bursal follicles and as well from cortical and medullary zones of thymus were pronounced. Both acute and chronic toxicosis brought about premature regression of bursa and thymus.
