Seroepidemiological study of urogenital schistosomiasis in Algeria: the Khemis El Kechna focus

The population of Khemis El Kechna, Algeria (total population < 5000) was surveyed for urogenital schistosomiasis between March 1987 and January 1988. 92 (4.9%) of 1876 urine samples contained Schistosoma haematobium ova, with the highest positivity rate and infection intensity in 15- to 19-year- olds 12.5% and in males (8.42%). 71% of the sample was represented by subjects below the age of 19. 275 (15.63%) of 1760 sera tested in immunofluorescence were positive.
