To understand the seroepidemiological pattern of scrub typhus in 1989 in South Korea, sera from 2295 patients with acute febrile episodes from 20 local hospitals were tested for antibody to Rickettsia tsutsugamushi by the indirect immunofluorescent antibody technique (IFAT) from January to December 1989. Of them, 965 (42.1%) showed a positive reaction to R. tsutsugamushi. Among seropositives to R. tsutsugamushi, females outnumbered males. Scrub typhus appeared to occur throughout the country.
