Serological investigations on chikungunya virus in the Republic of Guinea

A total of 1093 sera were taken from randomly selected subjects from 9 prefectures of Guinea [at an unspecified date] and tested for the presence of anti-chikungunya virus antibodies. Indirect ELISA was performed using a 10% brain suspension of neonate white mice infected with the Amblyomma variegatum strain (Av-5767) of chikungunya virus as antigen. All cases positive by ELISA were confirmed by the complement fixation test and blocking ELISA. Positive sera were found in all prefectures, and 51.7% of sera were positive, with a peak of 56% in the 21- to 70-year-old age groups. Minimal prevalence was registered in Kindia prefecture and the highest prevalence (82.6%) in Kouroussa, Siguiri and Kankan prefectures. The proportion of positive sera from male and female subjects was equal. In the Republic of Guinea 1093 serum samples from subjects selected at random from 9 prefectures were tested for antibodies against chikungunya virus by indirect ELISA. Positive results were confirmed by complement fixation test and by blocking ELISA. The prevalence of specific antibodies ranged from 43.9% to 82.6% for individual prefectures and was 51.7% overall. Seropositivity peaked in those aged 21-70 years (at 56%) and was 40% in the youngest age-group (0-10 years); there was no difference between the 2 sexes.Carolyn A. Brown.
