Serological reactions against Leptospira interrogans serovars in New Zealand horses

New Zealand Veterinary Journal 38(3): 124-125

A serological survey of horses was carried out following the identification in 1989 of a very high titre against L. interrogans serovar copenhageni and lower titres against several other serovars in a horse that had recently aborted; 2 in-contact horses had high titres against serovar hardjo. A total of 762 samples which were submitted to 3 animal health laboratories between 1988 and 1990 were tested. Significant reactions (titres of 25% agglutination at 1:200 or more were considered specific) against the serovars pomona, copenhageni, hardjo and bratislava were seen suggesting the occurrence of sporadic leptospiral infections in horses in New Zealand.
