Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in rural India: a preliminary study

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in rural India: a preliminary study

Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene 85(5): 622

Serum samples were collected from 123 visitors to a clinic in Kulpahar, Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1987. They came from 27 villages, and none was suspected of having toxoplasmosis. 18 (15%) were positive for T. gondii antibody by indirect haemagglutination. Eight males and 10 females were positive and there was a marked increase in seroprevalence in those >=40 years old. Although seropositivity was associated with the consumption of meat, owning a cat, and being a Moslem, these risk factors were not statistically significant.
