Serum ferritin and dietary iron parameters in a sample of Canadian preschool children

Iron status was assessed in 106 (44F; 62M) Canadian preschool children aged 4.9 +/- 0.6 years (mean +/- SD) from measures of iron intakes, calculated from three-day weighed records, and biochemical indices. Several significant correlations were observed between the dietary parameters and serum ferritin. Serum ferritin was most strongly correlated with dietary iron (r = 0.41; p less than 0.001), followed by total iron intake (dietary iron plus iron supplements) (r = 0.39; p = 0.001), dietary non-heme iron (r = 0.38; p = 0.001) and available dietary iron (r = 0.35; p. = 0.002). Only a small percentage of children had hemoglobins less than 10.9 g/dL (1%), mean cell hemoglobin concentrations less than 30% (7%), serum ferritin less than 10 ng/mL (3%) or dietary iron intakes below the Canadian Recommended Nutrient Intake (6mg) (5%). Hence the iron status of almost all of the children was adequate. Nevertheless, 60% of the children had calculated available iron intakes below the Canadian estimated average requirement for absorbed iron (0.91 mg/day). We suggest that the current method of estmating available iron intakes may be inappropriate for children with demonstrated iron stores.
