Serum haptoglobin is associated with experimentally induced atrophic rhinitis in swine

In order to assess the potential of haptoglobin as a method of early detection of atrophic rhinitis, 24 pigs were treated with turbinate atrophy toxin (TAT) from field isolates of Pasteurella multocida by osmotic pumps which released the TAT over a 7-day period, while 12 controls received Tris-EDTA buffer in a similar way. Serum haptoglobin levels were measured by cyanmethaemoglobin binding assay at intervals over 42 days, and turbinate atrophy was assessed in slaughtered pigs.
