Serum lipid levels in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance

Total serum cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol concentrations were measured by enzymatic colorimetric methods in 150 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), aged 15-73 years, and 138 control subjects, aged 16-72 years. In comparison to corresponding sex, age-, and body mass index- matched controls; only female subjects with IGT, both nonoverweight (body mass indices .ltoreq. 25 kg/m2) and overweight (body mass indices > 25 kg/m2), were found to have significantly higher total serum cholesterol concentrations, i.e. (mean .+-. SD) 218.6 .+-. 61.5 vs 187.3 .+-. 40.0 mg/dl (p < 0.02) and 220.6 .+-. 72.0 vs 193.1 .+-. 52.0 mg/dl (p < 0.02) respectively. No differences in serum triglyceride and HDL cholesterol concentrations were observed. There were significant correlations between fasting serum immunoreactive insulin levels vs total serum cholesterol concentrations (r = 0.195, P < 0.05), and serum triglyceride concentrations (r = 0.281, P < 0.001). However, no significant differences in fasting immunoreactive insulin were found between subjects with IGT and corresponding controls. In conclusion, female subjects with IGT had elevated total serum cholesterol concentrations with unclear reasons.
