Serum magnesium: normal values and limits

Serum magnesium: normal values and limits

Magnesium Bulletin 12(4): 127-132

Blood magnesium is 0.85 mmol/litre in the adult, with a standard deviation of 5 to 7%, which may exceed 15% under unfavourable conditions. Serum Mg below 0.70 mmol/litre is indicative of hypomagnesaemia. If clinical symptoms coexist with a suboptimal magnesium level of 0.70 to 0.75 (0.80) mmol/litre it is reasonable to conclude that there is a slight Mg deficiency which requires a supplement. Such treatment needs clinical and laboratory monitoring.
