Service area approach to rural development - a new experiment in social banking

Service area approach to rural development - a new experiment in social banking

National Bank News Review 6(9): 20-29

In 1989, India's public sector commercial banks and regional rural banks (RRBs) implemented a new institutional form of credit called the 'service area approach'. This study evaluates the performance of the scheme in comparison with previously existing ones, such as the village adoption scheme. A service area consists of 15 to 25 villages, controlled by a single branch of a bank. The bank is expected to conduct a survey of the assigned villages and assess their credit needs.
