Service area approach: expectations and realities - some observations

The Service Area Approach (SAA) was launched in India with effect from April 1, 1989, by the government, in order to bring about a qualitative change in rural lending practices. This article identifies the expectations and the achievements of the system as adopted by commercial banks and regional rural banks in the country. The 5 stages of implementation are outlined followed by a critique of the internal management of the banks involved.
