Soil mulching by wheat straw and its relation to soil temperature and moisture

The effects of wheat-straw mulching (0; 2.5; 5.0 and 7.5t/ha) on soil temperature and moisture of a Dark Red Podzolic Soil (Paleudult) of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil were studied. The temp. at 5cm depth was measured on 14, 21 and 26 Nov. and the soil moisture in the 0-5 and 5-10 layers, on 14, 18, 21, 26 and 29 Nov. 1985. Surface application of 7.5t wheat straw/ha reduced the max. soil temp. from 37.1 degrees to 28.6 degrees C, and increased the soil moisture content by about 10%.
