Liquid cultures were established from callus derived from immature embryos of H. marinum, a wild species with stress resistance. The frequency of plant regeneration from these cells was high and morphogenic capacity was retained for >1 year. Suspension cultures were initiated from H. vulgare cell lines, including one transformed with a gene that might function as a selectable marker in somatic hybridization. Protoplast fusion between H. vulgare and H. marinum was carried out using polyethylene glycol. Culture and selection of the fusion products are in progress.
