Abstract
Spectroscopic examination indicated that phaeomelanin was absent from melanocytes of brown wool from Australian Merino and Romney Marsh sheep. The results indicate that brown wool in these breeds is due to homozygosity for 2 recessive genes (Aa/Aa,Bb/Bb) rather than to interaction of the Awt gene with EB1, EBr or Ey, as occurs in brown-wooled Asiatic breeds.
