In the period 1968-89 there was a 47% fall in the number of Austrian farmers keeping cows and a 13% reduction in cow numbers, with average herd size increasing from 4.4 to 7.1 cows. Burgenland and Vienna regions saw the largest decreases in cow numbers. In 1989 some 51% of cows were still in herds of fewer than 10 and only 2.4% in those of more than 30.
