Studies on the chironomid midges (Diptera, Chironomidae) of the Nansei Islands, southern Japan

The Nansei Islands are located in the subtropical zone of the western Pacific Ocean between Kyushu and Taiwan, and are composed of 2 main island groups, the Amami and the Ryukyu Archipelagoes. Prior to the present studies, collections of the chironomids mainly in the urban areas of the 3 main islands of the Ryukyus were carried out by M. Sasa & H. Hasegawa, and a total of 42 species was recorded.
