By assessing damage caused by Nephotettix cincticeps to rice in cage experiments and in the field in 1974-82 in Japan, the tolerance injury level (economic threshold (ET) ?) was estimated to be 40 N. cincticeps per hill for early-ripening rice cultivars and 200 N. cincticeps per hill for later-ripening cultivars. Late in the season the density of the N. cincticeps population, at 10 per hill in 1974-83 and 2 per hill in 1986-90, was below the ET and it is recommended that no control measures are taken on late crops.
