In a Populus deltoides 'Lux' plantation, irrigated in 1983-86, water consumption for transpiration and volume growth increased as water supply increased. A 5-yr-old plantation (spacing 3x6 m) consumed 602.6-879.2 mm water in a growing season. For a volume increase of 1 msuperscript 3, 180-215 t water were required.
