Studies on the trends of inheritance of commercial characteristics of crossed Chinese pear parents in their progenies

A study of 2542 seedlings from 49 crosses showed that the juvenile stage in hybrids from crosses between Pyrus bretschneideri and P. pyrifolia was 4-5 years depending on the parental varieties used. At 6-years-old, flowering occurred in 70% of trees. Mean fruit size was less than in the parents and appeared to be under polygenic control. Fruit weight was generally about 27% lower than in the parents, but some hybrids proved to be exceptions.
