Silage with DM supplied as 100 + 0, 97.5 + 2.5, 95.5 + 4.5, 92.9 + 7.1, 91.3 + 8.7 or 87.5 + 12.5% whole maize silage + tomatoes (i.e. 100 + 0 to 50 + 50% maize + tomatoes) was ensiled in (a) non-hermetic 100-litre PVC silos, or (b) 500-litre polyethylene silos fitted with a valve to allow escape of fermentation gases. Data on chemical composition of the whole maize silage, tomatoes and mixtures before and after ensiling are given. Averaged over silo types, DM and CP contents ranged from 35.1% and 7.5%, resp., in whole maize to 21.3% and 8.9% in 50% maize + 50% tomatoes silage. Acetic acid and ethanol concn were greater for all silages in (b) than in (a).
