Abstract
Over a one year period, 286 children out of 972 cases of fever seen at the Ouagadougou hospital, Burkina Faso, had Plasmodium falciparum in blood and were diagnosed as having malaria. Cerebral malaria, simple malaria and malaria associated with other diseases was diagnosed in 110, 106 and 70 cases respectively. Malaria was the 2nd most important cause of fevers and the 4th most important cause of death. 11 of the 67 deaths recorded during this period were due to malaria.
