Study of the pH and buffering capacity of needles from declining silver fir (Abies alba) and Norway spruce (Picea abies). Applications in symptomatology?

Annales des Sciences Forestieres 46(1): 55-69

Extracts were analysed from current-year and two-year-old needles from trees with different levels of decline in forests in the Vosges, France. In most of the declining trees (up to 45% needle loss), the pH of foliar tissues did not differ significantly from that of healthy trees (3.5-4.0), while alkaline buffering capacities were nearly constant (spruce) or showed a small increase with decline (fir).
