When developing earheads were spray inoculated at 5 different developmental stages, inoculations made at anthesis, grain-filling and soft dough stages produced high disease scores (81.6, 89.9 and 95.6% seed infection, respectively, with consequent reductions in germination) compared with 42.1% infection after inoculation at the fully formed grain stage and no infection when freshly emerged earheads were inoculated.
