Suitable techniques for seed production, seed harvesting and seed treatment of A. gayanus grown in Senegal are described, as well as methods for establishing the crop from seed. High levels of seed production from this grass require adequate fertilizer inputs, but using the early growth as forage does not decrease seed yields if additional N is supplied. The ideal technique for collecting seeds is by bagging the inflorescences and gives 60% fertility and 85-95% germination of caryopses.
