The Japanese beef market: new opportunities for the Scottish beef industry?

The liberalization of the Japanese beef market following the signing of the Beef Market Access Agreement in 1988 between the USA and Japan and a similar agreement between Australia and Japan in the same year was welcomed by the major beef exporting nations as a new opportunity to expand sales in the growing Pacific Rim market. Scotland has not traditionally been a major beef exporter to Japan, yet the liberalization creates opportunities which should be considered by the Scottish industry.
