The effect of cow age and management on winter liveweight gain, liveweight at calving and subsequent effects on dairy production in a seasonal supply herd

Lifetime performance data for dairy cows at the Taranaki Agricultural Research station were used to determine the effect of live weight gain of heifers and cows during winter on dairy production in the following season. The av. live weight gain of old cows (>4 yr) was 3 times that of 2-yr-olds.
