A field experiment was established in Yugoslavia in 1977 on a Vertisol deficient in available P and mineral N, with a randomized block design in a wheat/maize rotation. The treatments were 120 or 150 kg N/ha per year, 80 or 160 kg P2O5 every year or 400 or 800 kg every 5 years, and 100 kg K2O every year or 500 kg every 5 years. Effects on wheat were studied up to 1990. Several years of application of N alone or N + K caused yellowing and drying of plants at the beginning of spring.
