The effect of preplant nitrogen fertilization and soil temperature on biological nitrogen fixation and yield of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)

Trials were conducted in 1987 and 1988 at Powell Butte, Oregon, to determine the effect of 0, 10, 20, 40 or 60 kg N/ha before sowing on yield and shoot N concentration of M. sativa Vernema. Growth chamber experiments were conducted in 1989-91 to examine the effect of 0, 10, 20, 40 or 80 kg N/ha before sowing at 18/12 degrees C, 24/16 degrees or 27/21 degrees day/night temperature on yield, percentage N derived from biological N fixation (PBNF) and shoot N concentration.
