The effects of polyethylene film mulch on the growth and yield of a spring crop of kidney beans

In trials in 1987-88, Phaseolus vulgaris was sown on 30 Mar. or 10 or 20 Apr., with or without transparent polyethylene mulch. The mulch increased the average maximum soil temperature at a depth of 5 cm during Apr. and early May by 8 degrees C and the average temperature at this depth during the emergence period by 5.4 degrees. The mulch decreased the numbers of days to emergence and to flowering and increased stem height, number of pods/plant and 100-seed weight for both green and dry seed.
