The effects of rooting on the structure of compacted soil zones after slit ploughing
Compacted soil zones were loosened by slit ploughing. Loosening slits, 10 cm wide and 20 cm deep, are generated 35 cm apart. The loosened zones operated like guide-lines for roots which extended well below the compacted zone, demonstrating the bridging function of slits between topsoil and compacted subsoil.
