In a trial on the effects of rare earth elements on cotton seedlings, seeds were treated with rare earth solution at 10-500 p.p.m. for 38 h before they were germinated in an incubator at 20 +or- 1 degrees C and 2500 1x. The seeds in the 100 and 250 p.p.m. treatments gave the highest germination, 23.1% and 24.1% higher than that of controls, respectively. Seedlings grown for 10 d were slightly taller and their stem DM was significantly higher than that of the controls.
