The effects of the presence of widely spaced conifers on under-storey herbage production in the U.K

An experiment was set up in Glentress Forest, UK, in which Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) at three heights (3, 5 and 8 m) was thinned to three square spacings of 4, 6 and 8 m between trees, equivalent to 625, 278 and 156 stems/ha. The tallest trees had the lowest four whorls of branches removed. Boxes containing established ryegrass swards (Lolium perenne Perma) were distributed in a stratified pattern beneath the tree canopies in the nine agroforestry environments created.
