The efficacy of microclimate shelters in improving seedling survival in re-establishment of the Clanwilliam cedar

The efficacy of microclimate shelters in improving seedling survival in re-establishment of the Clanwilliam cedar

South African Forestry Journal ( 151): 1-5

The effect of fire on the mortality and natural regeneration of Clanwilliam cedar (Widdringtonia cedarbergensis) is considered to be the main influence on cedar populations in the Cedarberg mountains in the SW Cape, South Africa. Regeneration is often unsatisfactory and recent re-establishment trials showed a 10% survival of direct-sown seedlings after the first summer, although 57% of seedlings in wire mesh exclosures survived.
