From 20 days old Black Pied X Holstein Friesian heifers were given throughout the feeding period a diet with haylage as the main roughage, haylage to 9 months, then haylage and silage to 16 months old, or haylage and silage throughout. All groups received equal amounts of whole milk, skim milk, concentrates, grass meal, hay, lucerne herbage, monocalcium phosphate and NaCl. During the feeding period average daily body weight gain was 692, 683 and 687 g.
