The results are presented of a survey of inhabitants of Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, with respect to their attitudes towards the environment, villages, agriculture and food i.e. the rural sector. In general, the urban population were aware that pollution was worsening in the villages but thought it had still not reached the levels evident in the towns and cities. Agricultural chemicals were regarded as important polluters and greater food safety controls were thought necessary.
