The importance of parental line breeding and the selection of superior parents in potato breeding: an introduction of the conference theme



Parental line breeding and selection in potato breeding Proceedings of the joint conference of the EAPR Breeding Section and the EUCARPIA Potato Section, Wageningen, Netherlands, 11-16 December 1988: 5-11



The use of established cultivars and specifically bred parental lines to produce new varieties is compared. A 'superior' parent is defined. The selection of parents on the basis of the phenotypic performance of the potential parents and their progeny is examined. The effects of good GCA may be negated by poor SCA. Thus, testing the progeny of the parents is desirable.
