A thermodynamic model was developed to evaluate sequential extraction procedures commonly used to characterize heavy metal fractionation in soils. The model was validated against results obtained from an experiment using sewage sludge treated soil with large organic matter, Zn and Cu contents. The model predicted limitations of the chemical extraction method due to the transfer of metals between soil fractions or effects of acidity.
