Budburst patterns and browning processes of Quercus dentata and Q. mongolica var. grosseserrata were observed from 1981 to 1985. Budburst patterns were classified into 5 types, depending on which bud burst and which were dead. These types varied with environmental conditions. Close to the sea in the coastal forests, most buds burst only from the lower lateral buds or dead shoots in winter: these 2 types were called 'coast types'.
