The thermal expansion of wet Norway spruce (Picea abies) in water was studied in the temperature range 20-90 degrees C. A transition at 63 degrees C is attributed to the softening of wet lignin. The position of this transition is lowered, as expected, by sulfonation of wood. For the sulfonated material, an additional transition at higher temperature was also detected. At temperatures below the softening of the lignin, the thermal expansivity of the wood was negative.
