Third World tourism: a vehicle of development or a route to underdevelopment?

The huge expansion in tourism to developing countries since the 1950s is described and its possible contribution to sustained development is discussed. Balance of payments and short and long term employment effects as well as sociocultural and environmental effects are considered, with supporting data from individual developing countries. Both positive and negative aspects are identified.
