Total parenteral nutrition: novel nitrogen substrates

Total parenteral nutrition: novel nitrogen substrates
A review. The concept of organ-specific substrates having a significant impact on the pattern of metabolism is developed. Parenteral nitrogen, which may have an impact on traumatic or septic nitrogen losses, is discussed. According to one hypothesis on the role of the gastrointestinal tract in mediating post-operative or septic response, glutamine from skeletal muscle may provide a significant substrate for the gut and for the cells of the immune system.
