A grain sorghum crop growth model, with special emphasis on yield damage caused by sorghum midge, (Contarinia sorghicola Coquillett)

A sorghum crop model was developed incorporating an existing sorghum midge (Contarinia sorghicola) model. By incorporating the type of hybrid, sowing date, weather data and other factors into the model, an estimation of midge population densities, potential insecticide application dates and yield loss were simulated. Preliminary results showed that the model provided reasonable estimates of adult midge densities.
