A new and improved reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid in water, grain, and plant materials

A new and improved spectrophotometric method, using 6 amino-1-naphthol-3 sulfonic acid (J acid), for the determination of 2,4-D is described. A mixture of 2,4-D and J acid dissolved in conc. sulfuric acid produces on heating to approx. 135 degrees C, a fluorescent yellow dye. The yellow dye, on the addition of 50% ammonium acetate, turns blue. The blue dye shows an absorbance max. at 610 nm and obeys Beer's law in the range 20-160 micro g 2,4-D/25 ml final vol. (0.8-6.4 ppm).
