A preliminary report on the wood preservative properties of phenylboronic acid

A preliminary report on the wood preservative properties of phenylboronic acid

Forest products journal 44(6): 46-48

The activity of phenylboronic acid (C6H5B(OH)2)(PBA) against two wood decay fungi, Trametes versicolor (Linnaeus et Fries) Pilat (ATCC 12679 isolate) and Postia placenta (Fries) M. Larsen et Lombard (ATCC 11538 isolate), was evaluated using a wood wafer/agar plate procedure. PBA will protect wood from decay by both these fungi with activity thresholds of between 0.09 and 0.17 pcf for T. versicolor and approximately 0.04 pcf for P. placenta. The antifungal activity is enhanced by the addition of copper. PBA is stable to hydrolysis during steam autoclaving and room temperature storage of a 1 percent water solution.
