A study of the ferricyanide reductase activity of the maize grain scutellum

Isolated scutella from maize hybrid Dneprovskii were capable of reducing ferricyanide when incubated for 30-120 min at 28 degrees C in a medium containing 50 mM KCl, 0.5 mM CaCl2 and 0.5 mM K3Fe(CN)6. Highest ferricyanide reductase (FR) activity was found in the portion of the scutellum adjacent to the endosperm. Ferricyanide stimulated acidification of the medium by the scutellum. FR activity was stimulated by MnCl2 and ZnCl2.
