The preparation of a Leishmania infantum extract and its further separation by gel filtration liquid chromatography are described. An extract (S) prepared from stationary promastigotes of a strain of L. infantum, uninfective to BALB/c mice, in conjunction with BCG as adjuvant did not protect mice against challenge with a virulent strain of L. major. Chromatographic separation of S yielded 5 fractions, designated P0 to P4.
