Analysis of the variability of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) growth during the early stages. II. Factors influencing seedling size in field conditions

Analysis of the variability of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) growth during the early stages. II. Factors influencing seedling size in field conditions

Agronomie 12(7): 527-535

In field trials at 4 sites NE of Paris, France, in 1987 and at 1 site in 1988, sugarbeet Bingo was sown in seedbeds with different structures (fine, coarse, crusted) at a depth of 2.5 or 4 cm with or without plastic mulch. Seedling size at the 4-leaf stage was reduced by late emergence, by soil crusts and clods and stones obstructing the hypocotyl and by deeper sowing.
