Analysis of two-rowed barley ideotype breeding in the lower Yangtze valley

Advances in ideotype breeding in this area of China since the 1950s were studied in 15 representative 2-rowed barley cultivars. Plant height had improved, the last 3 leaves had become shorter and smaller, leaf area per shoot had decreased, but the vertical distribution of leaf area had increased. Leaf N concentration and the ratio of chlorophyll a/b were higher in modern varieties. Chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate and maximum leaf area index (i.e.
