Anatomy and ecology of the underground organs of Anacardium humile

The juvenile and adult anatomy, morphology and ecology are described of A. humile, an arborescent species of underground habit native to caatinga, cerrado and savannas in central Brazil and savannas in Guyana, Venezuela and Colombia. The root system is perennial and very deep (15-18 m), but the underground 'trunk' is a true stem (length about 1 m, girth 36-50 cm), not a root.
